Lufthansa stranded my 16-year-old son in Detroit

It’s something out of every mother’s worst nightmare: Your child is stranded at the airport and won’t be able to fly home unless he forks over thousands of dollars for a new ticket.

That nightmare came true for Gloria Castillo-Ibrahim and her 16-year-old son, Kareem Amir Gharib, recently. They’re inexperienced air travelers, but in a way, nothing could have prepared them for the trouble they experienced.

Castillo-Ibrahim wants me to help her fix this problem, but I’m not really sure if I can, or if I should. Your thoughts on this case would be helpful.

The problem began when Castillo-Ibrahim’s husband decided to surprise her son for Christmas by booking two roundtrip tickets from Cairo to Detroit on Lufthansa’s website.

Case dismissed: No refund for my canceled Middle East vacation

Here’s another cautionary tale — as if we needed one — on the dangers of choosing an interesting destination for your next vacation.

How about Egypt? It’s got pyramids, museums – and a riot or two.

Catherine Green certainly got more than she bargained for when she booked a March 26 tour to the Middle East through On The Go. With all of the warnings being issued by the State Department, she was certain the tour operator would cancel the Egypt trip and offer her a full refund.

What you need to know now about traveling to Egypt

With Egypt descending further into chaos by the hour, I’ve been fielding a lot of questions from readers about what to do.

Don’t go, and if you’re there, get out.

The State Department has issued a stern travel warning to US citizens. So has the Canadian government and the British government. The advice is all pretty much the same: avoid all non-essential travel to Egypt.
