Frequently asked questions about Credit Karma

What is Credit Karma?

Credit Karma is a free financial service that provides users with credit scores, credit reports, and financial recommendations. It also offers tools for monitoring credit, finding loans, and managing finances.

Does using Credit Karma affect my credit score?

No, checking your credit score on Credit Karma does not impact your credit score. The company uses a soft inquiry, which does not affect your credit report.

How often does Credit Karma update credit scores?

Credit Karma updates credit scores and reports about once a week based on information from Equifax and TransUnion.

Why can't I transfer all my Credit Karma Money to my bank account at once?

Credit Karma Money imposes a $1,000 per day limit on transfers to external bank accounts. Standard transfers take 2 to 3 business days at no charge. An instant transfer option is available but carries a 1.75% fee. If you need to move a large balance out quickly, you’ll need to plan for several days of daily transfers. Credit Karma customer service has confirmed it cannot raise the transfer cap, so there’s no workaround through support. If you’ve closed your account with funds still inside, allow up to 3 to 5 business days for the balance to be returned.

Why is my Credit Karma credit score so different from the score my lender pulled?

Credit Karma shows your VantageScore 3.0 based on data from TransUnion and Equifax. Most lenders, especially mortgage lenders, use one of several FICO score versions, which calculate credit history differently. The difference between the two scores can sometimes be significant, with some users reporting gaps of more than 100 points. The score shown on Credit Karma is still useful for tracking changes and trends in your credit over time, but it is not usually the score a lender will use to make lending decisions. Before applying for a major loan, you may want to check your actual FICO score through myfico.com or through your bank if it provides that service.

I clicked on a loan offer through Credit Karma and now I'm getting dozens of marketing calls every day. How do I make them stop?

When you interact with a financial product offer through Credit Karma’s marketplace, your information may be shared with the lender involved and, in some cases, with affiliated partners. To reduce marketing calls, contact each lender directly and ask to be removed from their marketing lists. You can also register your phone number at donotcall.gov if you have not already done so. To limit future marketing sharing through Credit Karma, request that your information not be shared for marketing purposes. You may also be able to manage certain data-sharing preferences through the Data Preferences section at creditkarma.com. Keep in mind that marketing calls already in progress may take up to 30 days to stop after you opt out. If the calls continue, you can file a complaint with the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.

Credit Karma's "Approval Odds guarantee" said I'd get $50 if I wasn't approved, but they won't pay. What can I do?

Credit Karma’s $50 Approval Odds Guarantee only applies to certain offers that display the guarantee badge, and the eligibility requirements are fairly specific. To qualify, the offer must have included the guarantee, your application must have been denied, and the denial must have been based on creditworthiness rather than factors such as income verification or identity issues. If Credit Karma refuses to honor the guarantee, ask for the specific reason in writing through the in-app help chat and keep a screenshot of the original offer showing the guarantee badge. If the issue is not resolved, request that the matter be escalated. You can also file a complaint with the CFPB at consumerfinance.gov/complaint if you are unable to get a response.

It is not ok to offer you an outstanding approval to transfer a debt to a 0% APR for 18 months credit card ( Discover credit card) to run your credit just to get denied. THAT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE!! Please credit karma and all those credit cards offering fake approvals stop messing with people's credit score!!
