What you need to know about Bank of America

Bank of America's customer service is inconsistent in terms of response times and resolution. We receive occasional complaints. Here's one where the bank drained one customer's savings account, and another where a decimal point error changed a restaurant bill to €2,190 — and Bank of America wouldn't help.

Bank of America customer service policies

Bank of America maintains two separate privacy notices. The U.S. Online Privacy Notice (last updated June 2025) covers how the bank collects and uses personal data when customers interact with its websites, mobile app, and social media platforms — including browsing data, device information, geolocation, and voice queries. The U.S. Consumer Privacy Notice covers how the bank handles personal financial information under federal law, including when it may be shared with affiliates and third parties. Customers can limit some data sharing through the privacy preferences page. California residents have additional rights under applicable state law.

Bank of America loyalty program

Preferred Rewards is Bank of America's loyalty program, and it's free to join if you qualify. Your tier depends on the combined balance you keep across your Bank of America deposit accounts and your Merrill investment accounts. There are four tiers in total: Gold, Platinum, Platinum Honors, and Diamond Honors. The higher you go, the more you get. Benefits include a rewards bonus on eligible credit cards (up to 75% at Platinum Honors and above), better interest rates on savings, discounts on mortgage and auto loans, and waived fees on a number of everyday banking services. One thing worth knowing: Bank of America is rebranding the program as BofA Rewards on May 26, 2026, so the name and some of the details below may change shortly after this guide is published.
