When Tanya Fernandez checked into room 323 at the Microtel Inn & Suites in Colorado Springs, Colo., recently, she was met with an unpleasant but fixable problem: a broken toilet.

Fernandez, a purchasing agent for a flooring company in Sanford, Fla., was in town for the weekend to visit her son, a cadet at the Air Force Academy, and knowing she’d be leaving soon to see him, she decided to give Microtel a chance to repair the bathroom fixture.

It didn’t.

“We came back Friday evening and the toilet was not fixed,” she remembers. “So my young adult children had to come to my room and also use the lobby bathroom.”

Mom’s Element doesn’t work — can you help her?

Question: My mother recently purchased an Element flatscreen TV at Wal-Mart, along with a two-year extended warranty. I came to visit and noticed lines going up and down in the center of the television. Mom never noticed them because she is 83.

I immediately called the Element TV service telephone number where they gave me a report number and asked me to send to them photos of the lines in the TV. I sent the information and a representative called my mother and told her the TV was defective.

Element wanted her to ship the TV to them but first to give them a credit card with $300 approval to ship us a TV and then we ship them the defective TV. Element would in turn send us a new TV.

Do I really have to pay for this broken windshield?

1-IMAG0070Accidents happen. Even freak accidents, like the one Jonathan Perkins experienced in his Dollar rental car.

He’d rented a Ford Taurus in San Antonio. It wasn’t in the best shape, with 50,000 miles and a coat of grime on it, but it ran just fine.

“I drove the car two hours west, to a small town called Sonora, and stayed the night in a motel,” he says. “The next morning, I walked out to the car and got in, followed by my mom. As she closed her door, the rear window cracked, and fell into the car.”

Do I deserve a refund for a hotel shower that didn’t work?

The Hotel Universo in Florence, Italy, describes itself as a “hyper-modern” property where you can be surrounded by “bright colors and pop art-inspired prints.”

Presumably, that also includes working showers.

Help! Airline broke my wheelchair and ruined Hawaii vacation

It was supposed to be a vacation of a lifetime for Jane Gray — a trip from Southwest England, where she lives, to Maui.

But it ended in disaster when Alaska Airlines damaged her wheelchair on a connecting flight between California and Hawaii. And even though Alaska repaired her wheelchair and offered a flight voucher and eventually, cash compensation, it’s not enough. She wants my help.
