Sal Dickinson is the president of Florida Vacation Auction, and he inaugurates our “Meet the underwriters” feature today. Our underwriters support the consumer advocacy you see on this site, and I’m grateful to every one of them for helping make the travel industry a better place. If you’re interested in becoming a corporate underwriter, here’s more information.
What is Florida Vacation Auction?
FloridaVacationAuction.com is a Florida-exclusive travel auction site with weekly auctions on hotels, resorts, B&Bs, vacation homes and attractions tickets as well as 24/7 buy-direct promotional offers. We are the official auction partner of Visit Florida and are Better Business Bureau accredited with an A+ rating.
How does the auction work?
Hotels, resorts and B&Bs provide us with a minimum two-night stay, and attractions tickets, in exchange for four weeks of advertising on our website and Visit Florida. We then auction off those vacation stays and tickets on the third week of their respective ad listing, with an opening bid beginning at 20 percent of the retail value.
Auctions are active Sunday to Sunday, beginning and ending at 10 pm and bids are made in increments of $5. Winning bids are tax inclusive and there are no add-on fees by Florida Vacation Auction of any type – a winning bid of $200 is $200 and winning
bidders experience average savings of 60 percent or more.
Can you reserve specific dates?
You can but with accommodations there needs to be some flexibility as redemptions are subject to availability. Once a winner is provided with their won auction voucher — within four hours of an auction close — it is best to quickly make contact with that accommodation to request the desired dates of stay.
If your vacation plans are not flexible, it is best to use the Buy Direct offer featured for all advertisers, often at savings of 20 to 30 percent, which takes you to their website where you can book your vacation direct. Attractions are far more flexible and the majority do not have a availability restrictions.
Most auctions on accommodations are for two nights. How do you add nights?
We have a number of advertisers who feature longer lengths of stay in their auction ad listings so be sure to browse through the various offers.
If you are interested in bidding on one that isn’t in an active auction, you can use the “Watch This Auction” function as long
as you are logged in and you will receive both a New Auction Alert email once it becomes active, as well as a reminder email on the
Sunday morning of the day it is scheduled to close. If you win a two-night stay, you can — and we encourage — you add nights by purchasing them directly from the accommodation advertiser.
What are the costs and fees?
There are no costs to register with Florida Vacation Auction nor are there any surprise service fees and winning bids are tax inclusive, so the winning bid amount is all a winner is ever charged. Some advertised offers do have fees that are excluded from the auction such as resort or parking fees or cleaning fees on vacation homes and condos — clearly identified in each ad.
One other thing to be aware of is a test authorization transaction of $10 that occurs once a bidder submits a bid on a vacation. We do this to prevent fraud and to validate the credit card — we don’t store credit card information in our customer accounts — but this $10 fee is reversed within 24 to 72 hours after the auction closes, whether you have won or not, subject to the credit card issuer.
