Years ago when I traveled with my parents my mother would always check the room before she agreed to it; I still do the same; also no leeway for insufficient towels , or soap Complain nicely but firmly ; do not accept anything even a light bulb or remote not working; you are paying room not vice versa.

I have actually had reasonably good experiences with the Comfort Inn Paddington Suites in the Backwater section of London. the rooms are quite inexpensive by London standards and are a reasonable size. When during a stay in November, the heater in my room stopped working, they pulled out all the stops to try to fix the problem. When they couldn't, they changed my room to a larger one quickly and efficiently. I think they handled the matter professionally and promptly, not necessarily something I would expect considering how little I was paying for the room.

1) have your credit card company/bank void the charge. If they don't stand buy you threaten small claims; if there are enough dollars invloved, take them to samll claims.

We recently took a 3500 mile road trip in the US and Canada and had the misfortune to stay at "Comfort Inn." Although the room was clean, it is clear that the motel chain is mis-named.
