I would have been absolutely OUTRAGED by a refusal to provide a refund in this case.
My faith in humanity, even with an airline, is renewed a little bit by the fact they did see these were the most extenuating circumstances imaginable and agreed that
common decency must govern.
Three and a half cheers for UA!

Although Joe F's comment sounds very rude as per the situation of the fellow who lost his wife, I have to agree. The faster you tell them what you want, the better the situation becomes for you. You really shouldn't have to tell them in one letter the situation in another letter send the certificate and on the next letter what you want from them, it should be handled all from the beginning.

Thankfully Chris was able to resolve this situation...

That's shocking. Here's another one for you that's equally bad - a woman got sick on an American Airlines flight and required oxygen, but the tanks on board were all empty, and she passed away.

I'm sure AA are treating this more carefully than if she'd died before or after getting on the plane, but their response still doesn't seem very compassionate: http://www.gogirlfriend.com/travel-news/american-airline-passenger-dies-7200

The airlines don't have a good track record right now of caring about passengers, it's a shame, but true.

Without intending to be rude - a letter these days, given the number of complaint letters that they get [which, if they thought about it for a moment should trigger some red flags, but, apparently do not] should read:

Dear United:

Wife Dead.

Can not make trip.

Want Refund.

Death Certificate attached.

Thank you.
