I have an overseas trip coming up in late August. I was summoned for jury duty in March and reported so I have no fear of being summoned while away...however it is my husband...he has not been summoned in six years, so I do have a fear of him being summoned while we are away. As stated, someone has no idea that they would be summoned while planning a trip. Reading these posts gave me some comfort. I didn't know you could reschedule jury duty due to a pre-scheduled trip. So in the event he is summoned during our trip, we will try to reschedule just duty for him. Just not showing up is a bad thing...when I reported in March for jury duty at a federal court, we were told failure to report could result in not just fines, but also imprisonment!!

I live in Washington, DC. I recently received a jury form from the Federal Court. The form said if you had pre-existing travel plans they would excuse you. The form asked for a copy of the itinerary. So we are talking about the same court and the same jurisdiction. The policy may have been different when Mr. Vincent was summoned. I don't know. But at this time, as of September 2009, the pre-scheduled travel would be an excuse.

Jury duty is easy to postpone, sometimes several times. Federal jury duty can be postponed multiple times.

Although I realize I am responding to a much older posting, I recently found myself in the same situation. I found that it was actually easier to reschedule my jury duty! In the state of California (not sure about elsewhere) there are several ways to do this. You can simply write on the form which comes with your summons that you will be out of town and request to show up the week after you return. Another option (I have done this in the past by mistake) is to simply not show up! They later send you a notice saying you failed to appear and in a "shame on you" way, they tell you to call immediately and reschedule. Now I am not recommending this last method as it is probably not technically legal. But when it happened to me I called in and was very apologetic and the clerk actually let me chose the dates to reschedule!
