Well it may work in the U.S. but NOT in Canada.
Flying back from London, Heathrow on Air Canada on our anniversary, asked flight attendants VERY NICELY, about getting upgraded to Business Class, as there wasn't a single passenger in that class - it was empty.
After some pleasant conversation he explained they won't upgrade anymore. Air Canada had just reduced they're benefits, & cut wages, so they were not going to do special favours either. They were very nice about it, & I commented I could understand their anger, but since it didn't cost them a penny, & I would still eat Hospitality food, why not? NO GO!
No bitterness, everyone was pleasant & I said while I didn't understand, thanks anyway.
After dinner was served, the captain did come on & advise it was our anniversary & champagne was served to all. But no upgrades.,

This does not work for Senior Citizens especially "Women " I know from experience, & i was a former Airline employee many years ago, & am allways nice to the Check in Staff, but unless you belong to this "ME" generation you can forget the upgrade. in times past yes, but not any more sad to say,
