Curiously, this is one arena where frequent travelers may be at a disadventage. If you've joined the automotive frequent travelers program where your car is already picked out and all the paperwork is inside the car, you may have less than 24 hours to use the car if you arrive late and the paperwork is not updated.

I rented a car from Hertz in Irvine CA. My flight was delayed by about an hour. I was scheduled to pick up the car at 3, but I didn't get the car until 4:30. When I returned the car at 4:30 the next day the computer charged me an extra fee. I had to go inside where the manager removed the charge and recommended that I get the paperwork updated if I am late in picking up the car.

It doesn't matter what time you "schedule " your return it is based on the time you pick up the car.

When I book a car, I often schedule a return time later than I expect (so long as it doesn't put me over another day). For example, my Thanksgiving trip has me picking up my car at about 6:30 pm. I booked the return time at the end of the trip as 6:00 pm, even though my flight departs at 5:55 pm. I'll likely drop the car as early as 3:30 pm, but it helps to know that I won't be charged a fee if I hit a bit of traffic and get there at 4:15.
