John F: That's fair enough, but when I bought a house last year, I got 56,000 miles just because I started looking by typing "lendingtree.com/aa" into my browser instead of "lendingtree.com". It was still the best deal (and I would have gone elsewhere if it wasn't) and it paid for my ticket to Europe this summer. That's literally a $1,000 bonus just for typing three characters into the browser.

So promotions like this can definitely be worthwhile -- often, there's a 'referral fee' built into the price of a mortgage (or, indeed, of many goods), and if you don't find a way to extract it, someone else will profit.

I think too many people are too tied to the programs as you mentioned. Really, what does 18K points get you? I am not sure it even gets a one way upgrade much less a free ticket. ANd I certainly hope the interest rate obtained was the lowest available and he did not take a higher rate loan because of these points.
