At least you got an answer from Trip Mate. I will never, ever use Trip Mate ever again. I bought travel insurance from them. When there was a common carrier delay during my trip, due to my mobility disability, Trip Mate denied my claim, using some of the "small print" in their policy. After appealing twice and still being denied, I contacted Chris. Trip Mate has refused to even answer Chris's enquiries.

I didn't know there was such a "free look" period and I'll bet a lot of folks reading this didn't, either. Thanks for the heads-up, Damian. That's info we can all use.

Your line here hits the nail on the head :
"When you call the sales department, they’ll tell you what they need to make the sale"

Most disagreements and misunderstanding about travel insurance can be avoided by fully understanding your policy. As you stated Chris, you really need to read the brochure for the plan, or even better the policy "certificate". This is the actual legal document that spells out exactly what coverage you have, and what is not covered.

Even though the certificate is a "fine print" insurance document, they are actually written in fairly clear language, and are only around a dozen pages. Take a half hour to read through it and call the insurance company with any questions. If there is something you don't like about it, all reputable travel insurance companies offer a full refund guarantee if the policy is canceled within 10 days of purchase. This is called the "Free Look" period.
