You hit the nail on the head. We usually take two week-long vacations and a couple of long weekend trips a year but have planned none for 2009. Instead, we're taking one week off at home and may take a second week o drive to visit relatives with whom we will stay. There are several reasons for this:

1. cost of travel
2. we're tired of being gouged by airlines, hotels, and rental car agencies who charge us and then fail to provide adequate service
3. we're sick of the hassle of planned travel

I'm not saying "never again". In case of an emergency I would certainly not hesitate to fly, rent, and stay. I might also consider a driving trip to a regional destination but I wouldn't make any reservations in advance. Instead I would meander along and stay where I felt like staying when I felt like it at whatever rate was on the table that day wherever I found a vacancy. It sounds way more relaxing to have no plans and no tethers to prepaid services.

Hi Christopher,

I run a travel website for home exchanging, 1stHomeExchange.com (http:/www.1sthomeexchange.com) and we continue to see our membership increase with registrations from all over the world.

Yes many people will not travel this year but many others will look at alternative travel holidays such as home exchanging. A home exchange allows for significant savings since you completely eliminate accommodation costs - one of the most expensive items during a holiday.

In addition, many people also swap cars - this provides for further savings. So what might have cost $10,000 for a 2 weeks holiday (family of 4) can easily be brought down to below $5000. A home exchange holiday is no more expensive then staying at home (once you factor out the flight costs).

In addition, there are numerous other benefits that a home exchange provides such as experiencing a vacation living like a local and the friends that you make.

Hopefully, things will pick up as the year goes along. The economy will likely continue to drop slighty over the course of the next year or two, but people tend to spend on entertainment during tough times. Though the spending will likely go to movies, sports, or closer-to-home activities, travel picked up significant momentum and will likely be on the minds of many.

Who won't want to get away with all the doom and gloom all over the news?
