You might have missed Essential 2009 Travel Strategy # 10: “Buy Travel Insurance”

Most travel industry observers agree not to expect the same number of travel suppliers to be in operation at the end of this year as are now competing for survival in January. A comprehensive policy, such as a Travel Insured Worldwide Trip Protector, covers most bankruptcy or default-based cancellations, whenever you prepay for a cruise, tour, resort stay or vacation rental. Losing the dream 2009 vacation bargain you planned on because your travel supplier disappeared between booking and departure is tough, but getting your money back, or having to stand in line at the bankruptcy court to hope for a refund of cents on the dollar is brutal.

Great suggestions, Elliott. I'm applying the last one to a planned trip to the UK later this year. I had a low fare false alarm and am now waiting the airlines out.

Great list - thanks for putting it together. I'm just back from a 16 day trip to Spain during which I took advantage of most of these tips/points and it saved me a fortune. Airfare, currencies and specials really can work to your advantage right now.

Also, as Gennaro suggested - saddle season is the time to travel. I absolutely love traveling during the mid-low season periods as you still can get great weather, increased access to major tourist venues and fantastic prices.

Great suggestions. I'd also consider traveling to countries during their off-season. A lot of regions are quite wonderful when the weather slightly off...even better than when they are overly crowded with perfect climate conditions
