Travelers don't have to stand for the hotel price hikes in 2008 if they invest just a little bit of time seeking a lodging alternative, as you mention. Travelers should look for vacation rental homes that are professionally managed, like those showcased online at PickPackGo, that have staff on-site to help if there is an issue. They'll find professional property management helps ensure the homes and condos are well maintained and ready for visitors. With a vacation rental, travelers can enjoy more spacious and affordable accommodations than a hotel room, particularly if they are a family or group traveling together.

I would use mass transit if it were available where I live. But it's not. However, I drive a fuel-efficient car and try to make my gas go as far as I can. Trains would be great, and I'd use them, but there's got to be a better system. Train travel that is safe for a woman traveling alone is usually on private tours that are prohibitively expensive.

Amtrak tends to use old train terminals that often deposit people in bad places. Depots that once were in a city's hub are now in places where you need a bulletproof vest and a bodyguard.

I'd love to see train travel become common again and I'd use it. However, if the train travel industry couldn't do any better than the airlines, I'm better off taking my chances in my car. At least I know the idiot behind the wheel. ;)

Our law firm has clients and we are bringing a class action in March against both major cruise line holding companies for the fuel surcharge. Look for a press release from us - also included will be changing the terms of the contract by RCCL from booking to final payment. Customers have paid millions, maybe tens of millions. We intend to try to get the money back, dollar for dollar, and barring that, 50% more than the fuel surcharge in credits on future bookings.
