Why should Europeans come here to visit? They have a great rail transport network and can travel about mostly at will. Over here we have a terrible rail system outside the Northeast Corridor and a few minor corridors in the Midwest and West Coast. Other than these it is one train a day (half of them in the dark) and in some cases a daily train every other day. There is also another reason why folks are not coming to the US -- even if their Euro is worth around $1.50 and their Pound equals $2.00 on the exchange -- the illegal war that Bush started in Iraq. They don't like us and thus they don't come here. They just travel back and forth amongst themselves on their great trains. Meanwhile, Bush is busy rebuilding the railroads in Iraq while he proposed a shutdown budget for Amtrak. Go to narprail.org to see what you can do to help change our direction.

I'm not sure how an extra $3 for a passport is going to make travel too expensive (that's an extra $12 per family of four... practically negligible). Seems to me that the US should worry less about the travel plans of its own citizens and worry more about foreign visitors. People from overseas frequently complain about confusing entry requirements and difficult security. With the US dollar so low, there is great potential for tourism growth.
