I welcome these upcoming bargains and can't wait to take advantage. I've been seeing proof that you are correct in your assertions that travel is slowing:
1. I just flew from Atlanta to Newark and back using 25,000 miles on Delta! On a weekend! This is the first time in years that the 25,000 reward seats were not sold out for the dates/flights I wanted. Additionally, I had a huge selection of flights to pick from!
2. My family and I spent the first week of September at Disney and we got an amazing hotel deal - $49 a night at the Pop Century. Who cares if the room was a little small? We were in it o sleep and my kids loved it there. Plus, the parks were hardly crowded and we often got to stay on rides for a second turn without having to get back on line. I think part of that was due to the time of year as well.
3. My fare to go to Sarasota, FL on business next month was only $179. Earlier this year it was $350, and that was not during peak season either.
4. I've got an SUV reserved for that trip (to carry my many, many boxes of samples) for $50 per day!
I, too, traveled the week after 9/11, and our flight to California was half empty. Although the events that created that circumstance were horriffic, I have fond memories of that flight as being one of my best ever. I wouldn't mind a little more of the same happy travel memories going forward. I'm going to start checking out flights for a Christmas trip this week!
