If you want to avoid ALL the hassles hav a reputable travel agent look after you. Contarary to popular belief it is NOT cheaper to book flights on-line, we all have access to the same deals, its just a matter ot timing on both the booking and travel times in order to get the cheap rates. Then if a mistake is made the agent would have to wear the cost.

I was actually able to fly without difficulty 2 years ago on a ticket with the incorrect name. It was booked by my father-in-law's assistant, and she used my husband's last name (I never changed my last name). I called the airline and the TSA and both said it should not be a problem, but to bring a copy of my marriage license just in case. I also brought my birth certificate.

Both documents were looked at cursorily when checking in for one leg of my flight and not at all on the other leg. Security at the checkpoints also did not even blink at it. So, it may not be as large of a problem after all.

Jan is bi-gender and that is the reason for the hassle on the name change.

If it was Susan/Sue or Elizabeth/Liz it probably wouldl have been fine.

I inadvertently fell to the wrong name blunder recently. But then how was I to know what the legal first name of the travel was when he forever goes by his nickname.

I found out with this blunder and now take care with his reservations. ;)

Folks in the U.S. should be made aware that Europeans use a numeric date format that is opposite ours. For April 5th, 2008, Europeans would write 5-4-08 instead of the 4/5/08 we are used to. A number of European airlines use that format on their booking sites.

I must be especially careful when entering dates for tickets on such sites. It is very easy to get oneself ticketed on the absolutely wrong dates!
