There's a great big hole in the advice about finding your own shore excursions and transportation.

If a bus full of passengers on a ship's tour is delayed, it's the cruise line's problem.

If you arranged something yourself, it's your problem.

If I arrange something myself, I make sure to stay fairly close and leave plenty of time.

I took a Mediterranean cruise on Holland American's Westerdam last summer. We got a fantastic deal buying 2 liter bottles of Absolut in the ship's duty free shop for $19.99, then took them back to the room and consumed them there. Nobody seemed to mind. Sure beat the $7.00 for a measured one ounce drink at the bars!

#14 - Do not cruise. Take that $6000 a week and put half of it in the bank and spend the $3k on a KILLER land vacay. You end up $3000 ahead. Whats not to like?

you are gonna get nickeled and dimed. 18% tips for everything. No choice in that. Almost mandatory tips for the cabin crew [why should I fund the cruise lines wages?] - photos, etc etc etc.

#15 - do NOT eat at ANY buffet. Ewwwww. Breakfast in the dining room. Lunch in dining room. If you paying for decent food - eat it.

#16 - Book the excursions on the dock. Offer them a third of the starting price. Pay in cash.

#17 - each adult packs a bottle of their favorite liquor in the checked luggage. Or bring 3 bottles of good wine for the cabin. Do NOT buy the booze on board - they do NOT let you bring it to the cabin.
