American Airlines bumps Hadassah Bennett from a flight and compensates her with vouchers, which she redeems for another flight. But a chronic illness flares up and she is forced to cancel her flight. Can she persuade American to return her vouchers for her to use on a future flight?

When Bob Fournier received an email from Spirit Airlines indicating that his flight had been rescheduled, he thought he had been bumped. From where he sat, he was facing the same circumstances as if he had been involuntarily denied boarding: Not only was he unable to fly home at the originally scheduled time, but he also would have to book a hotel room for a couple of extra nights, rent a car and miss a day of work.

Airline travel can be stressful. You get to the airport hours before your flight, endure the security checks and then spend time trying to find a seat in the departure terminal. And you spend a small fortune on something that is alleged to be food. Then, just when you thought the worst was over, you find out you might not be going anywhere because your flight is overbooked.

Kicked out of my first-class seat to make room for a crewmember

Denyse Sadkin and her husband had two first-class tickets from St. Thomas to Buffalo on US Airways. At least they did until the airline bumped one of them back to economy class to make room for a crewmember. The Sadkins, which had redeemed a total of 120,000 frequent flier miles for their flights, weren’t happy with their new seats, so they asked US Airways to be rerouted. It refused.
