Here’s the final piece of the ancillary revenue puzzle. It’s an amorphous category known as miscellaneous operating revenues, and although we may not know that much about it, we do know there’s a lot of it being collected by airlines. Like, almost $3 billion worth of it last year. And probably about the same amount in 2010.

It’s not your imagination: Fixing your airline ticket is more expensive these days. A lot more expensive.
The Bureau of Transportation Statistics has some fresh numbers this morning that suggest airlines are no longer spending a fortune on fuel. Last August, domestic carriers spent an average of $2.02 per gallon on fuel — up from $1.90 a gallon the previous month, but down dramatically from the $3.54 in August 2008.
All this talk of higher airfares begs for some perspective. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics just released its latest airfare data, which showed a record decline of 9.1 percent decline in ticket prices.
