I just ran into a situation with the Travelocity "Price Guarantee" recently, and trust me, it is far more convoluted than you might imagine!
I booked a roundtrip air and hotel package for my daughter on January 21, 2010 at a price of $1420.77. On February 16, 2010 I returned to the Travelocity website to check recent prices and found that the identical (I repeat, IDENTICAL) trip was now selling for only $1308.73. I figured this was a slam-dunk case for their “Price Guarantee”, but to my surprise it wasn’t! It seems that in the fine print they have numerous dates that your trip must fit within, so be forewarned to read ALL their fine print prior to feeling warm and fuzzy about the trip you just booked.

I think one thing to realize here is that these companies do it because they <i>can afford</i> to do so. It's certainly well and good if they go farther and cause others to follow suit to compete, but...they don't really have to.

I'll be darned if one of them comes up with some kind of "combined" guarantee: they'll check for themselves if someone booked the same trip at a lower price, then refund the difference to the original credit card used without further action on the customer's part. That'll probably be the day.

@Keith

Chris is right when he says an army of attorneys couldn't take advantage of these. One of the rules of price guarantees is that the lower booking must be identical. For example, if I book mon-wed and u book a lower mon-thurs, no price guarantee. Or if I book a regular room for $100 but you book a room for $90 that includes internet, no price guarantee even though your room is lower.

Those are the games that are played.

The hotels.com guarantee seems to be the same - anytime until check-in you can get the difference refunded. Hotels.com isn't offering the $50 discount, but they seem to have more hotel choices - particularly in Europe.

I don't see what the confusion is. Travelocity will refund you the difference if you find a lower fare all the way up until the day of your check-in. The other sites will only refund you the difference if you find something cheaper within 24 hours of making the reservation. So if you make a reservation 3 months out and the price drops anytime before you leave then travelocity will give you some money back. If you book with the other providers you are on your own 24 hours after making the reservaton.
