The Prime Travel Protection Services mystery is solved

August 27, 2008

So who is Prime Travel Protection Services?

I asked that question yesterday after one reader lost two cruise vacations when his insurance claim wasn’t honored by the company. Specifically, he alleged that Prime Travel Protection Services, Travelers Protection Services, Vacation Protection Services and Trip Assured, are one and the same. This morning I got a call from Jerry Watson, the president of Prime Travel Protection, with the answer.

The four businesses appear to have at least one thing in common: him. “I was involved with all those companies,” he said.

Watson sold policies for Trip Assured and was a partner with Vacation Protection Services. After that company closed, he was a partner in Travelers Protection Services, but when he discovered what he calls  “irregularities” with payouts, he quit to start a new business, Prime Travel Protection Services.

Earlier this year, when Travelers Protection Services ran into what he describes as “financial problems,” he acquired its assets.

“What I’m doing now, I think, is right,” he adds.

And what is Watson doing? The reason he acquired Travelers Protection Services was to protect the agents who had sold his former company’s travel protection products and, ultimately, to process the claims that had been made against it, he says.

He estimates there are currently 250 outstanding claims out of 60,000 policies underwritten by Travelers Protection Services. They could cost his company anywhere from $300,000 to $600,000.

I asked Watson if the products sold by his company as well as its predecessors, were insurance. “It’s not an insurance product,” he told me. For that reason, he said, it does not need to be registered as a licensed seller of insurance in Colorado. Technically, Prime Travel Protection Services insures itself, although it has business insurance that would take care of some of its outstanding claims if it were to go belly-up.

All of which brings us to the case of Paul Donahue. Here’s what he had to say about his grievances.

There were two claims from Mr. Donahue — one in February and one in April. We reviewed the medical records with a physician, and determined that he would have been able to travel. The conditions weren’t disabling. That’s what we based our denial on.

It would have been nice to tell Donahue of the formal denial. He’s still under the impression that his claims weren’t processed at all. But Watson says both the travel agent and the customer bear some responsibility for this misunderstanding.

People often don’t read the contract. We try to do everything we can to let them look at the policies, including giving them a free 10-day look. They can get a refund anytime before that 10 days. In a lot of cases, the agencies don’t understand what we’re selling.

Maybe this is one of those times. A traveler who though he was insured, but wasn’t. A travel agent who sold travel protection without fully understanding what it could — and couldn’t — do. And a travel protection company that, by its own admission, could have been clearer about its product.

First of all I want to thank all of you for sharing information about all of Watson’s dealings. It has helped me in my efforts to bulid my case against Watson. I have written to authorities in Oklahoma, Florida, Tennessee, Illinois and Colorado. All are still working the problem. I live in Oklahoma. The cruise company in Florida (Anchors Away) asked me if I wanted to purchase travel insurance. I did. They purchased it from Watson then in Tennessee but claiming to be domiciled in Illinois. I was billed for travel insurance. After I submitted my claim (for over $8500) Watson (because of a Tennessee court order) moved to Colorado and changed the name of his company. So, you can understand why I am working with all of these states. I want to join in on your effort. Please tell me how to contact you. I think that I can at least help others aviod the issues I face. I have much more information to share. I believe that Watson is conducting business in states that previously told him to cease-and-desist. Obviously, that is why he moves and changes names so frequently. It is alo apparent that the product he sells is insurance. Once again, please tell me how I can help and thanks for your many valuable insights.

I was scammed last May (my husband and I booked our first cruise-and a honeymoon) when my husband and I both became very sick. We followed every step cautiously and trusted CRUISE VALUE CENTER who told us that as long as we had a doctor’s medical release we would recieve a full refund with PRIME TRAVEL INSURANCE. But Cindy gave every denial she could think of as we kept showing her more and more proof, they never worked with us, never called to say they recieved our faxes, and even denied picking up certified papers we sent to them that were some how never seen again. IT WAS INDEED A NIGHTMARE and STILL IS. Both my husband and I left messages daily and weekly asking if we could talk to CINDY who was working on our case. If we did reach her – she would talk in circles making no sense. It was scary. I requested to have someone new work with us but they refused to make a change. By the time the fourth denial came in the mail stating that the claim could only be covered IF the person had a life threatening disease or sickness. LIFE THREATENING…I read the policy once again and there were no such words of life threatening anything. It was always a different denial that we had to proof ourselves with. My last call to their office in Colorado was very hurtful. DANIELLE told me they made their decision and they were NOT going to change their minds!!! I felt powerless. I felt I had no say. I cried for days…I felt emotionally abused. Tonight I finally found your website! What relief it is to know all that I read. I was told by Cruise Value Center that they had dropped Prime Insurance because of others they had unacceptingly denied. My first thought was “WHO ARE THOSE OTHERS…WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS TOGETHER!”
I don’t know exactly what you meant for US to do by taking action with our state insurance department. I don’t want to feel helpless anymore…please let me know specifically who will listen, etc. and who are the right people. I live in Washington state, would like to pursue my case, but not familiar with all the legality. Thank you again for starting this website!

My husband and I booked a cruise with Anchors Away in August 07. We purchased travel insurance and were billed for “travel insurance” for a crusie to Europe in April of 08. When my husband became seriously ill in January of 08 we had to cancel the trip. Anchors Away refunded our Air line and hotel expenses and Royal Carribean refunded all but $900.00 penalty which we felt PTP should refund. We have contacted the North Carolina State Insurance Commissioner and the state attorney general. Watson has used several reasons for denying the claim. I only hope we can prevent him from defrauding others and hope he will face a required vacation at state expense.

Someone mentioned Best Price Cruises as complicit by promoting Prime Travel Protection. Recently BPC started selling a product they claim is not from Prime but a careful review shows that it is in fact a Prime Travel product.

This should indeed show that Ron Russo knows he is acting outside of the law.

He is currently the largest seller of Prime “policies”. Those who read this blog and purchase cruise vacations from BPC should be wary of BPC attempting to sell a product from “vacationprotect”.

We are at an advanced stage with action against Mr Watson and travel agents who represented him.

This is the last chance to get on board.

    Contact Arthur at king2j@aol.com

It sickens me to read the posts by Brenda Hanes and Karen Prentice among others. Repeatedly requesting more documentation regarding your claims and the talking in circles are all part of the game to wear you down. I urge all of you to contact Arthur at king2j@aol.com. Arthur has been working feverishly with investigators in several states as well as banking officials. It will be just a matter of time before Prime Travel Protection is shut down. Mr. Watson is a felon who has served time for financial crimes. Agencies like Best Price Cruises who have been warned repeatedly about the illegal operations of this company will also soon find themselves in serious trouble. Your information is vital to help the investigators in determining all the losses and possible restitution that may be ordered.

My husband and I purchased travel insurance through Diana’s Travel/Vacation Connections, Spring Hill, FL in May 2008 to cover a cruise scheduled for November 2008. We were forced to cancel when it was discovered my husband had oral cancer. After surgery, it was recommended he receive radiation treatments. These treatments ran through the cruise period. Diana’s Travel cancelled the cruise in October and we were advised to contact Prime Travel Protection, Inc. from whom we purchased the insurance. Documentation of the required medical procedures was forwarded to PTP, Inc. It was received there in November 2008. Signed for by a K. Perkins. No word was received from them. Called them today, 01/26/09 only to be advised by recording that they have gone out of business. Add us to your list. Have tried to contact Ciela Capital Ins. Co. Ltd., the underwriters, but have not been successful.

I have been following this blog for a while. Believe me, the travel agents know exactly what they are selling! (or in this case, not selling!) It may be of some consolation that the true owner of Best Price Cruises, Sandra Russo, (Ron Russo is only the Exec. Director) was served papers by the local Sheriff’s department of St. Lucie County, Florida on Friday, Jan. 23, 2009. I do not know the content of the serving nor the action involving it, but I can assume it may be related to this – with regard to Arthur’s comments of “sparks are going to fly” and that the “Florida Agents have been under investigation”. But also personally knowing Sandra Russo – it could be for anything. They need to dig deeper into Mr. Russo’s personal involvement with Jerry Watson. I noticed that Prime Travel Protection was incorporated in April 2005, I know for a fact that Ron Russo, at that time (March/April 2005), had “partnered” into the insurance company that Best Price Cruises was selling. You guessed it, Prime Travel Protection aka Vacation Protection Services. At least that is what he told me, maybe he never did, I don’t know. But, it is worth looking into.

I, too did not give my true email address, the people involved are vindictive and ruthless and will stop at nothing to protect their ASSets.

  • concerned

Best Price Cruises notified Prime on Friday that they were changing to another company this week. Maybe it has to do with papers served. Maybe Prime closed because BPC is going to do business with someone else. BPC says that my policy will be placed with another company by Wednesday – we’ll see. Any other news appreciated as we have a policy with Prime .

  • James

If you think Watson’s closure of PTP is the end of his operations, think again. As previously posted, Watson was an officer in a company called Traveler Protection Services (TPS). Public records also list a Chris Poucher as an officer in TPS. Tennessee authorities ordered TPS to cease and desist this past May. In the same order, Vacation Protection Services (VPS) was also ordered to cease and desist. Public records list a Chris Poucher as the registered agent for VPS which filed for termination in the state of Tennessee in August ’07. The domain registration site, “register.com” lists a Chris Poucher as the registrant with a Georgia address for the site, “insuremydeductible.com”. The date the domain was created was July ’07. And who is listed as the registrant? That’s right, none other than Jerry Watson.

  • charles

Word on the block is that Watson has another business “conference protection” and that is what he is concentrating on. Sources tell me that he has nothing to do with the company named by James but that he was the registered admin contact for about ten domains purchased in 2007.

watchpuppy is correct. There are folks on this blog that are intent on destroying the lives and good names of people who have not been associated with Watson since he started Prime and have no dealings with him now.

It would be really great if people on this blog would concentrate on getting their claims paid and not posting names and information about which they have half of the story. Lets let the authorities get to the bottom of the issues.

I have yet to see the names of any of Watson’s partners in Prime. These folks may be helpful in the efforts going on here.

    Charles

  • Mr Helper

    Charles,
Here is one of Jerry Watson’s partners at Prime Travel Protections. Mr David Hancock, this title is(was) V.P.Of Sales. His moblie number is 1(954)240 2652 ( I believe he lives in the FLL area) his email is davidhancock@ptprotection.us . Thats all I have for you, I hope this will help with who ever is helping the clients that bought this so call insurance and now without a travel insurance plan….

  • james

Charles you seem to know an awful lot about Watson. Instead of talking in circles, why don’t you contact the authorities? Please explain this, your “sources” tell you that Watson has nothing to do with this newly uncovered company. If so, why would he be listed as a registrant? Is it just a coincidence that Watson is the registered contact for a company that also lists the person who he was in business with at other companies? Check with your “sources” and provide us the names of Watson’s partners since you state they may be “helpful in the efforts going on here”. (Am I the only one here that suspects if you aren’t Mr. Watson, you are someone who has a relationship with him).

  • james

You are right about Watson’s other business called “conferenceprotectionplan”, Charles. This company is now out of business, too. However, do you know who the domain name is registered to? Nope, not Jerry Watson, but Chris Poucher. Seems the two of them are tied together at the hip.

  • charles

James, I think your information is incorrect. The “other” company appears to still be business but not under the name you mentioned. The domain registration for “conferenceprotectionplan” is Prime Travel according to namesecure and Poucher’s name does not appear on the registration.

The appropriate authorities have been contacted and are investigating at their pace which is usually very slow with these matters.

I worked with a large travel agency in Florida who was a client of Prime. This agency more than likely will be involved in litigation against Prime so I mustbe careful. Several people on this blog have contacted me directly, I have given as much information as I can in an effort to help out but I won’t smear someone just because I have a name. Luckily you dont’ know everyone who was or is involved which will be uncovered in the event of litigation against Prime and Watson.

    Charles

  • james

Charles, conferenceprotection.com and conferenceprotectionplan.com are one in the same company – same phone number, same address – both out of business according to the telephone message.

  • Brenda Larsen

I am working with authorities from six different states. I would be pleased to share copies of my letters with one and all. I think that a class action suit is in order. I also believe that persistence and a large number of people involved are very important to our effort. My goal is to have my just claim paid. If, in doind so, Watson is run out of business, that will help future unsuspecting travelers.

We need to get better organized. Let me know how I can help.

  • Best Price Cruises

On 1/15/09 Best Price Cruises (BPC) received verifiable information regarding serious issues with Prime Travel Protection (PTP or Prime) operations. We immediately investigated and subsequently decided to contact major travel insurance companies with the goal of switching coverage to another provider as quickly as possible. Late last week, we also informed Prime Travel that we would be switching companies no later than Thursday 1/29/09. We believe this action was likely the last “nail in Prime’s coffin” and accelerated Prime’s closing of operations on Monday 1/26/09. Last week, we also demanded and received claims paid & claims denied information from Prime. A review of this information is ongoing but as of 1/22/09 already resulted in substantiated findings of delayed claims processing, near insolvency, and denied BPC claims nearing 20%.

BPC is posting on this blog for general information and because this situation requires immediate action on our part. We will not debate this issue with blog members.

Even though not fully finalized, we find it helpful to offer the following information regarding our intent to pursue the following actions:

    1. To provide coverage with an established 50-state registered & verified travel insurance company for all BPC customers who have yet to travel. This will be at NO ADDITIONAL EXPENSE to our customers and this will hopefully be finalized by Friday 1/31/09.

    2. At BPC’s request, Prime has offered & agreed to continue to receive claim information for IN PROCESS claims through a special number setup for BPC customers. This may only be for a limited time depending on Prime’s legal filings, but at least for now the process is in place as BPC seeks an alternative solution.

    3. BPC has requested that Prime package up all claims of BPC customers that are both pending and denied and forward the information to us immediately. BPC will have a qualified third party company (at BPC expense) adjudicate previously denied claims (opened within the last year) to verify entitlement. Once the re-adjudication process in complete, BPC will review the possibility of making those persons with newly validated claims whole at BPC expense.

    4. BPC will likely file action against Prime for misrepresentation of underwriting & state compliance, and of course monetary damages through PTP’s liquidation and their financial bond, for actual funds spent to cover customers and the costs involved with resolutions presented in the aforementioned items.

These processes could take some time to complete but we will act as quickly as possible and keep you posted. Queries regarding claims denied and claims in process can be emailed to: ptp@bestpricecruises.com.

I purchased “travel insurance” from Traveler Protection Services under the umbrella of Cruise Adventure Travel, LLC. My invoice plainly categorizes the service I purchased through Cruise Adventure Travel as insurance. Contact information for the travel service (not the insurance) is

    Ste. 7

Based on the above comments, I did not give my correct email address – sorry, but I wanted to add to the body of evidence, if this will help anyone.

  • Best Price Cruises

PS – for what it is worth, two people have informed me, unsolicited, that “Charles” is Mackenzie Johnson of Trip Assured. I apologize in advance if this is by some chance incorrect.

  • Al

Mr. Russo…Nice try, but a little too late.

On September 19, 2008 you received verifiable information from me in an e-mail that I am posting below. In that e-mail I provided you with information regarding Mr. Watson’s operations and the fact that he was violating insurance law in all 50 states. I also included a recent Cease & Desist order issued to Mr. Watson related to his previous companies. I urged you not to rely on Mr. Watson’s explanations and to conduct your own investigation to confirm what I presented. To state you did not receive verifiable information until January 15, 2009 is a lie. I suspect on January 15 you realized you were in hot water with the state regulators and even though the money was good (probably better than the commissions on the cruises you sell), you knew your business was on the line and it was time to cut the gravy train with Mr. Watson.

I find it almost comical that you claim just a week ago you found out that the declination rate of BPC claims neared 20%. Do you want me to post the e-mails that you received and ignored from agrieved customers? Only if you were living in a cave the past six months would you have not been aware of how your customers were being treated by PTP.

Your offer of a third party administrator to adjudicate the claims looks good on the surface, but it won’t fly. You, Ron Russo along with your wife, Sandra sold a bogus product to your clients and that’s where the game stops. What is the third party administrator going to do? Adjudicate an illegal contract?

Yeah, go get ‘em Ron and sue PTP for misrepresentation…that’s a good one. The problem is it was Best Price Cruises who did the misrepresenting. Didn’t your website list PTP’s product as “insurance” for months? (Your old website can be easily accessed).

As far as your action being the “nail in Prime’s coffin” – better look closely as to whose name is on the coffin, Ron.

And finally, you are wrong about “Charles”. He’s not the Johnson (Edward McKinley “Mack” Johnson) from Trip Assured fame. “Charles” is Chris Poucher – former employee of Trip Assured and partner with Jerry Watson in Vacation Protection Services and Traveler Protection Services.

I was surprised to learn that Best Price Cruises has a relationship with Jerry Watson and Prime Travel Protection. Mr. Watson has been moving around the country selling his travel protection products one step ahead of the regulators. He began in Tennessee with Trip Assured which was shut down by several state regulators after he left the company. He opened his own company in Tennessee under a different name. He then moved to Illinois and formed another company under yet another name. He is now on to his third state, Colorado operating under the name – Prime Travel Protection. He has already been ordered to cease doing business in Tennessee (see attached order). No matter what Mr. Watson may tell you, the law is clear – a product that offers a reimbursement for a loss is considered insurance and therefore appropriate regulatory issues must be followed. By not “calling” it insurance does not exempt the product from state regulators. Florida is currently investigating this matter and under the circumstances I feel you have put your company at great risk should Prime Travel Protection be found in violation of the law. You need to check this out yourself – don’t rely on Mr. Watson’s explanation.

  • Harry Baxter

Contrary to what Mr. Russo stated, that he first learned that Prime was a shady company about two weeks ago, here’s a copy of an email that I sent to him in September of 2008:
    ————————————————————————————————————–

    Dear Mr. Russo:

As a satisfied customer of Best Price Cruises, I was stunned today to learn that you would, even inadvertently, expose you customers to the risk of thinking that they had travel insurance, when in fact, you’re giving them a free product from a known fraud merchant, Mr. Jerry Watson, CEO of Prime Travel protection. I only discovered this when a friend sent me the following information from your website:
    http://www.bestpricecruises.com/travel_insurance/vp.htm

Giving the product away as “free insurance” isn’t an excuse. The product is worth less than that, and if you have any registered insurance agents on your staff, you are risking the health of your company by dealing with this company. Even Legendary Journeys, who I consider a less-than-reputable company, dropped Prime as a supplier when they found that Tennessee had issued a Cease and Desist order against Mr. Watson’s fraud company. Do you remember Trip Assured and McKinley Johnson? Trip Assured is now out of Business. Mr. Watson got his start there. He’s now performing the same fraud, in several states, under several different company names.

Please read the following link which appears on the Cruise Critic Board: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=836190

Please don’t regard this a a crank letter. I’m not a crank, but I’m an individual who was defrauded by Trip Assured. I know many other people who were defrauded, and I even know of some Travel Agencies who were forced into bankruptcy after dealing with Mr. Johnson and Mr. Watson. I plan on taking many cruises in the future, and I don’t want to see your company, one that I regard highly, disappear. After you drop Mr. Watson, he’s probably sue you. Don’t take it personally; it’s his modus operandi.
If you don’t take action, that’s your decision. Hold on to this note, though, and read your travel industry literature faithfully. In the next couple of months, some unpleasant things could happen to Mr. Watson’s company as a result of action by more states, including Florida. Please don’t get caught in the web that Jerry Watson is weaving.

many of the previous earlier suspicious comments/claims/charges re: Watson & PTP were either refuted with documentation including court papers or not verifiable.

C’mon Ron you know and I know the information you received was documented and verifiable. The problem is you bought Jerry Watson’s line and couldn’t cut loose from those fat commissions.

I’ll tell you what I will do to make this fair. Since you seem to like third party aribrators, I’ll provide the information I sent to you for the past few months to the Florida investigators who are looking into this matter. We’ll let them decide if you knew what you were selling while representing Prime Travel Protection.

  • Harry Baxter

By the time that I wrote my first email to Mr. Russo warning him that Jerry Watson’s company was a fraud, Tennessee had already issued a Cease and Desist order against Prime Travel Protection.
    THIS WAS VERIFIABLE.
By the time that I wrote the email, it was well known that Mr. Watson worked for McKinley Johnson at Trip Assured, which went out of business in 2006 after the company was exposed as a fraud.
    THIS WAS VERIFIABLE
By the time that I wrote the email, the Cruise Critic Discussion Board was awash with postings from customers who had been defrauded by Prime Travel Protection.
    THIS WAS VERIFIABLE

This probably won’t be my last word on the subject to this blog.

The following cease and desist order regarding Jerry Watson’s previous companies were sent to Ron Russo at Best Price Cruises over four months ago. He obviously ignored the warning. Had he done his due diligence, how many customers would have avoided the problems that have been discussed on this board?

Jerry Watson’s former partner at Vacation Protection Services and Traveler Protection Services, Chris Poucher had a bad week, too. Poucher who runs insuremydeductible.com (where you can find Watson’s name listed as a registrant on the domain registration) was served yesterday with a temporary restraining order by MaxSpecialty – a public company that does underwriting. Poucher’s website listed MaxSpecialty as his company’s underwriter. The problem is MaxSpecialty has never heard of Poucher or insuremydeductible.com

  • James

This is crazy, Harry! I looked up the insuremydecuctible.com website and it is very clear that MaxSpecialty is the underwriter. To use the name of a public company in such a manner might find this dude, Poucher facing jail time if the company presses the issue. A public company isn’t a bunch of senior citizens trying to get a $1200 refund from Jerry Watson. It’s interesting how these guys are tied together.

  • Al

Ron Russo may be in this deeper than he cares to admit. Whoever it is on this blog (Arthur?) who has contacts with the state investigators, you may want to pass this information on…

Best Price Cruises is the DBA for Vacation Superstore Network, Inc. – a Florida corporation that lists both Ron Russo and his wife Sandra as officers. If you go to go the website, vacationprotect.com you will note in small print there is a copyright mark identifying vacationprotect.com as part of the Vacation Superstore Network, Inc. The website includes only a front page.

Previous posters have alleged Mr. Russo’s involvement with a travel protection company. This certainly looks to confirm those allegations.

Mr. Russo, it’s time to come clean. Have you or are you involved with a travel protection company ? Your silence will raise serious questions.

I posted a help email address a few days ago. The response has been almost too much to handle so I am replying to 90% of requests via this blog.

1 There has been controversy about responsibilities and a raging debate about the inside knowledge of bloggers. Bloggers have been our lifeline and have produced the most remarkable information – thank you.
2 Every piece of shared information is putting the puzzle together.
3 We are not a bunch of senior citizens, although I don’t think that blogger meant offence, we are yesterday’s creators, executives, leaders and motivators who, with great good fortune, still have active minds and are driven by people who scam us. We have put Watson out of business and got regulators to ACT. We are in fact highly organized.
4 Face the facts: Watson and his entities have gone and we will NEVER get any reimbursement from him. Rant rave and release your pressure but forget cash.
5 The total concentration of our efforts must be reimbursement from TRAVEL AGENTS. They were complicit and knew full well what Watsons “protection” was all about. I will not repeat the accurate and stinging comments by recent bloggers but the MONEY is with the TA’s.
6 Watson and his predecessors are professional crooks intent upon defrauding the travelling public. TA’s set up as simple travel agents and got caught up in a scam because of big commissions and turning a blind eye to Watson’s previous convictions and C&D’s. They have multiple millions of dollars of business to protect, and their licenses will be revoked if they do not pay our claims. Best Price Cruises’ crawling, “don’t count me”, attitude is typical of what we will see from people like Lee Smolinski of Smartcruiser.com.
7 You will not get a reimbursement unless you have filed a complaint with Florida giving your claim amount and all the details. Contact the Florida Department of Consumer Affairs and give details on their hot line. Tell them you know a multi department investigation is in progress and you wish to be added immediately. DO IT ASAP. The Florida Bureau of Investigation has done a wonderful job but they cannot help you without details and documentation.
8 Write to your cruise line and complain that their appointed travel agents should have known Watson was bogus. Holland America Lines have been worst and will not give any credits. Don’t use HAL. Crystal have been best, others are in-between.
9 We, as a group, had convinced credit card issuers and processors to cease operations with Watson. Now we are going to do the same with 12 + travel agents. This will cut off their lifeline unless they pay our claims.
10 Re read, re read and re read your communications with an agents and PTP – there are details and dates which will trip them up and expose the agent’s complicity. Especially check payment dates of you premiums because a common scam is to take your money and not pay it to the insurers/protectors until the last minute.

Excellent points, Arthur. For those of you who bought a PTP “policy” from one of Lee Smolinski’s companies you might be interested in the following…

Smolinski was one of the biggest producers for Trip Assured – a similar protection company run by a former Watson colleague. Trip Assured was ordered to cease and desist by a half-dozen states before the credit card companies pulled the plug on them. One would think Mr. Smolinski would have known better than to expose his clients to yet another scam operation. I guess the fat commissions from Jerry Watson were more important than the welfare of his clients. For this very reason, it is my belief Mr. Smolinski and his agencies defrauded those of you who purchased a PTP product. I don’t think Mr. Russo at Best Price Cruises was unaware of the scam either. I know I warned him months ago and had he done a little research, he could have saved many of you a lot of grief. Now Russo thinks he can make it all better as he posted above, by having another company adjudicate the fraud he helped carry out.

As Arthur wrote, don’t count on getting a dime from Watson. He’s probably already scouting out another state for his new business. However, your travel agent who sold you this bogus policy is where the liability lies. If you paid by either MasterCard or Visa you should contact the fraud investigators at the respective companies listed below.

    MasterCard: Paul Paolucci…paul_paolucci@mastecard.com
    Tel: 914-249-5447

    Visa, Inc: Valerie Vizena…vvizena@visa.com

Yes, In September 08 I spoke to Cruise Value Center about my nightmare with PTP. I was told that they were fully aware of this insurance company because of other complaints recieved. One of which a sister lost her life during surgery recovery and PTP denied the claim. Yes, they were fully aware of the situation back in September 08. Their reccomendation to me was to go to Princess Cruise line and see what they would do for me. LOL

  • Arthur

That is a wonderful and informative post Al.

Hit your travel agents and hit them hard.

  • James

Don’t forget CLIA. CLIA stands for Cruise Lines International Association and their logo was prominentely displayed on the PTP website. Contact Executive Director, Bob Sharak at the e-mail below and let him know how you were duped into believing PTP was a legitimate organization because they had the endorsement of CLIA. If you bought the PTP product as a result of the CLIA endorsement you might consider action against them. They are located in Ft. Lauderdale and will have a tough time explaining to a judge how they allowed membership to PTP. I suspect they’ll make excuses like Ron Russo has done at BPC.

  • Arthur

James. CLIA responded 6 weeks ago with a “member of good standing”?
Your point is good and will be followed.

  • James

Karen…If your cruise was supposed to be booked with Princess then you should pursue legal action against them. By allowing Cruise Value Center to book their cruises and earn a commission, they become a representative of Princess Cruises and Princess is responsible for their actions. If you bought an electric lawnmower from Sears and it was defective causing an injury, who would you sue? You would sue the manufacturer and Sears. Don’t let these cruise lines and travel agents off the hook. Princess doesn’t just appoint anyone to sell their product – well, maybe I am wrong, it appears they have in this case and should be held responsible. Write them a letter and ask for a refund or a credit on a future trip and if they refuse, let them know you’ll see them in court and you’ll be sure to tell your friends.

I received this email from bestpricecruises and Ron Russo:
I am so sorry for the position that Prime has put us all in.

At the present time, we are working with Prime’s attorney to create a HIPPA
privacy law waiver acceptable to all parties. I hope to have the attorney’s
settle this by Friday, so that I can forward it to you for signature. Once
executed, we will be able to forward copies of your file to iTravel’s
claims adjusters for review and, if necessary, re-adjudication of the
claim. Without the records we are working in the blind.

    I will keep you posted

    Regards,

    Ron Russo
    Executive Vice-President
    Chief Operating Officer

Just WHO is iTravel? What connection do they have with a phony travel insurance policy sold by BPC? Is this another of those insurance outfits in Vanuatu?
    Someone please enlighten me!

I understand that Ron Russo of Best Price Cruises is using a company named ITravelInsured.com to arbitrate claims against Prime Travel Protection. Have any of you received confirmation of this?

I looked at the ITravelInsured.com website, and from the information shown, I see no evidence that this company represents any insurance companies at all. Instead, I see a number of companies that sell “Travel Protection” with all the warts and lack of financial backing that this implies, as Prime Travel Protection and Trip Assured proved to us.

There are a sufficient number of companies out there who sell legitimate travel insurance to preclude the need for any traveler to buy a non-insurance product. I can even provide a couple of website addresses for sites that will give competitive quotes from real State Approved Insurance companies.

What is Mr. Russo trying to prove by this? If he’s asking for a jury of Mr. Watson’s peers to judge whether Mr. Watson and Prime Travel Protection acted properly, I don’t expect the outcome to change.

One last thought….if your company doesn’t represent companies that sell insurance, do they have the right to use a name like ITravelInsured.com? No one who ever purchased a product from PTP or Trip Assured knew that they weren’t insured until it was to late. How long are we going to let this travesty continue?

  • Al

You have got to be kidding, Harry! Best Price Cruises’ Ron Russo just doesn’t learn a lesson. iTravelinsured is not endorsed on either of the two most popular travel insurance conumer sites: insuremytrip.com and tripinsurancestore.com. While this doesn’t mean they are not reputable companies, one would think Russo would have chosen a major player to help him get out of this mess. But then again, would one of the major travel insurers agree to “arbitrate” for the clients BPC defrauded by selling the PTP product? I doubt it. My sources tell me that PTP with it’s fat 40% commissions wasn’t the first bogus product BPC sold to their clients – Trip Assured and Vacation Protection Services were also earlier Best Price Cruises insurance vendors…both of course, were run out of business by state regulators and guess what…Jerry Watson had his hand in each one of those companies.

Interesting history regarding iTravelinsured. A very well known company, TravelInsured had been around before iTravelInsured was created. Travel Insured took iTraveIInsured to arbitration over the name similarities as registered on the internet. Travel Insured lost and iTravelInsured was allowed to keep their name. It was a legal win, but legal wins don’t always reflect what is morally correct.

  • MsHelper

Yes, very interesting details about this iTravelinsured company. They are not even a true insurance company, but some front to offer insurance thru a “National Small Business Travel & Health Association” http://www.nsbtha.org , go to itravelinsured web site, you will also see many other links.. But this nsbtha makes out it’s a real business, but it run and owned but iTravelinsured… Sorry folks, but this looks to much like “PTP, VPS and any of those companies”, does Jerry Watson have shares in this one too… A few facts I just found out from other agents who know or used this iTravelinsured.

First, Cruise value center sold iTravelinsured, then moeved to PTP just last year (informed from one fo their old agents), Back on 2006 to 2007, iTravelinsured as banded from selling their so called insurance in the state of Florida!! Any FL agents/agenices out there who sold them and can offer more light on this? Then in 2008 they started to sell their so called insurance ago, but with different names or underwriters names? Also heard the same things about the legal battle thing with Travel Insured, who are a real insurance company! Finally, I spoke with an agency who sold iTravelInsured. She stop selling them as they just seems so hard to deal with on claims, and then told her that they are a 2nd insurance, not first? So passengers with claims need to claim first with their own health, home insurance before iTravelinsured would review it??? Oh on their web site it states they are under a company called IMG (international Medical Group)? When google this name, it looks like this company was too having problems in different states about their insurances???? Hope this helps you all? Seems now that PTP, VPS is not the only question mark when it comes to who us agents should use for our clients travel insurance… Ms Helper..

I’m satisfied with the answers for now, I’ll keep you posted

  • MsHelper

http://www.nsbtha.org/about_us.htm . This link says it all… iTravelinsured is in the same building as IMG and yes.. NSBTHA…. Itravelinsured is licensed to other insurance thru this NSBTHA… Read between the lines.. Also check our their underwriter, named changed from Sirus to Delos around the time they had insurance problems with FL… IF anyone had done a little more worl reviewing with Jerry’s outfit, this would never happened… May be ask Why many of the listed travel agencies above use to sell ITravelInsured, then PTP, now moved and are selling one of the big travel insurance companies polices? So the writing on the wall with this one……. Once bite.. .we all heard that…Good luck if you sell Itravelinsured my friends. Best bet sell on of the bigger well known insurance companies!!!
