Northwest’s regional carrier wars

March 23, 2006

Things could get a little dicey (as if they weren’t already dicey enough) for Northwest Airlines passengers, reports the Lansing State Journal. The airline, which is already flying under bankruptcy protection, is embroiled in a tug-of-war with its regional airlines, Mesaba Airlines and Pinnacle Airlines, over costs and routes. At the same time, Northwest plans to start its own regional carrier.

How will this play in the customer service department? Well, Northwest certainly has a lot of work to do already, and this just adds to its troubles. For customers, it means that no part of Northwest’s operation will be untouched by the ravages of bankruptcy. Not even its regional operations.

I’m clueless as to how Northwest thinks that starting up it’s own regional airline will be a cost-savings over the AirLink routes run by Mesaba and Pinnacle. Surely the start-up costs alone would be more than Mesaba and Pinnacle are charging…wouldn’t they?
