As I've always learned, there's no harm in asking. The worst thing you can ever be told is "No."

@Chicky

It happened once to me. I was a student and a young lady and I arrived at the door to the school at the same time. I held the door open, having been raised that it was the gentlemenly thing to do. I was rewarded with a cursing about sexist male pigs that would have made a sailor blush. So much for being nice.

They've already cut their prices, I expect it is difficult to get extra freebies. Some people are better at getting them than others I guess. Aside from being switched from an aisle seat to a middle seat (although it got me home 5 hours sooner), I've been treated pretty well - sometimes I get extras, but usually I'm just happy to get what I paid for.

I've said it before: good manners and civility do not cost a dime. They are, however, priceless. It takes effort, sometimes, to muster up that smile and a pleasant, "Good morning," but I've never heard of anyone being treated worse because they did.

As long as you treat people well and with respect, they are more likely to be a bit giving during the holiday season. That is what this time of year is all about. Yea, gifts from people you know are nice, but the good attitude and kindness of complete strangers are worth a lot in terms of overall good will and repeat business, at least for me.

Chris,

I think you overlook something very fundamental. These organizations are run by people alike. You have nice individuals and complete A-holes to put it frankly. You might catch a nice one who has a great day and willing to go that extra mile. You might catch a grumpy one chooses to follow the book to the exact reading. It's all about luck. Sometimes you just happen upon some nice people who know how to get the ball rolling in your favor. Sure, they are bending the rules. Yet, in many cases, it will make people return. One bad experience offset by a good experience can have a lasting impression.

Oh yeah? Tell that to the idiots that gate-checked my bags all the way, and then (it was a connecting flight), at the connecting airport I have to lug around those heavy bags! All of this for a hefty fee, eh? I pay, I carry...nice fleece!
