Just to counterbalance the comment from Ernest, I want to point out that over the years many of my clients have purchased insurance from Access America, and while most have never had a claim, those that did were treated well. To say that the company is a fraud that should be put out of business is a bit over top.

I have had several negative experiences with Access America's insurance and decided they were a fraud. Just my personal view but it seems they only respond when some one with clout shakes their tree.

As far as I am concerned, they are a fraud that needs to be put out of business.

I think it is suspicious that another client of Access America made the exact same complaint about calls going unanswered (see linked post "He said/she said" dispute). Given the number of complaints posted on this site about Access America, consumers would seem wise to avoid them entirely.

When you say that "Access America did the right thing by issuing a refund" you left out one key word - 'finally'. The fact that they failed to respond to a formal request by mail, then promised a 3-day response and stiffed Mr. Miller on that, too suggests this is a company that cannot be trusted to be there when the customer needs them. That they finally responded to your ombudsman efforts might suggest that Access America only pays attention when smacked with a large enough 2-by-4.

Buyer beware.

One 'perk' I provide for my clients traveling internationally is a international calling card. Sure, cell phones are handy, but not all work overseas, and if they do, not all can afford or want to afford the charges.

Using an international calling card goes a long way to solving the problem with US numbers not being reached from foreign countries.

I've had problems accessing U.S. numbers collect from abroad. I needed to call my bank's customer service collect from the Greandines, and also got the "call cannot be completed as dialled."

I don't think this is Access America's "fault", but perhaps the insurance companies, banks, etc. should provide international access numbers instead, like calling cards do?
