What's the book corporate America doesn't want you to read? Find out now -- or you could get scammed.

Go fetch, Bringo!

August 25, 2006

Ever tried to call a company’s 800-number, only to get stuck in a maze of options? Press “1″ for customer service, “3″ for Spanish and “4″ for “I’ve lost my patience”?

(And while I’m on the subject, why don’t those phone trees ever use option “2″? Is that some kind of software glitch?)

Now, there is hope. A new site called NoPhoneTrees.com promises to help you navigate the confusing branches of a company’s phone tree for free. The service, which also goes by the catchy name of “Bringo,” includes most of the major travel companies.

Here’s how it works: Pick the company you want to call on the Web site. Type in your phone number. The site calls the company, navigates its phone tree and calls you back when you’re in the queue for a customer service representative.

NoPhoneTrees.com is in what’s called a “soft” beta launch — in other words, it’s a work in progress — but it’s up and running now.

At least one other blogger has weighed in on it and he seems to like it.

Have a look (or listen) and let me know what you think.

Personally, I’m disappointed that it is even necessary to have a site like this. The fact that anyone would create NoPhoneTrees.com says volumes about the utter lack of customer service in corporate America. It’s shameful.

Hopefully, sites like this will shine a bright light on one of the darkest corners of American businesses.

No, I’m not talking about the executive office, though it’s plenty dark there, too. I’m referring to the cube farms in middle America, the Phillipines and India, where “customer service” calls are routed, scripts are read in monotone, and people are not helped after spending half an eternity navigating a phone tree maze.

We can do better.

Christopher . . . NoPhoneTrees may be o.k., but you can overcome those “press 1 for this, press 2 for that” customer “service” highjinks yourself by using this website: http://gethuman.com/us/
Many U.S. companies of all stripes (banks, insurance companies, utilities, etc.) are covered. Try it. I have and I get a Bank of America human being in just seconds rather than minutes.
