No one was surprised when Spirit Airlines announced that as of this weekend, the discount carrier would begin charging $10 for a second checked bag. That’s the kind of thing that discount carriers do, after all. But that Big Air would follow so soon … who would have predicted that?
Well, it turns out British Airways has a new simpler baggage policy (their words, not mine) that mirrors Spirit’s policy.
For example, if you’re on a long-haul flight from, say, London to Tokyo, and you’re seated in economy class, it will cost £120 to check your second bag.
Ouch!
So who would have predicted that? It turns out someone did say that luggage fees were coming to the major airlines. My colleague Charlie Leocha said this would happen back in August.
Nice going, Charlie.
