Ask the Armchair Traveler: what shoes should I wear on the plane?

March 1, 2008

When it comes to footwear, the Armchair Traveler has got you covered. Here’s the latest installment of his videocast, in which he answers the question: What shoes should I wear when I fly? Here’s a high-resolution version. (Note: the leather shoes in this videocast are actually made by New Balance, not Ecco.) Christopher Elliott is the author of Scammed: How to Save Your Money and Find Better Service in a World of Schemes, Swindles, and Shady Deals. Critics have called it “eye-opening” and “inspiring” — it’ll “grab your attention and won’t let go.” Order your copy now on Amazon, Barnes & Noble or iTunes.

The last time I travelled to the US was on December 2004 and was the only person on Security who was not required to remove her shoes. Why? The shoes I was wearing were what I would call “chinese ballet slippers” made of fabric with a very thin plastic sole. Through several security checks (in Miami, Atlanta, Houston, St Louis) I was never asked to remove these shoes, apparently the sole was considered too thin to pose a “threat”.
