If you’re traveling on JetBlue today, you might want to check your flight status. The airline is “precancelling” scores of flights because of severe weather, as it has done several times since its infamous Valentine’s Day meltdown. But today’s cancellations appear to be far more aggressive than any other airline’s, including Northwest’s. Of 579 flights being tracked by FlightStats, 259 have departed, 102 are canceled, and only 35 percent are running on time. Some 80 flights are delayed more than 45 minutes.
“The operational challenges today are all weather-related,” JetBlue spokesman Bryan Baldwin told me. “Severe thunderstorms are moving through the Northeast this evening, impacting all carriers. Ground delay programs are in effect in the New York metro area, causing delays. We will be back to full operation tomorrow in preparation for the start of weekend holiday travel.”
Of Northwest Airlines’ 1,454 scheduled flights being tracked by FlightStats, 121 have been canceled today. Its flights are running 77 percent ontime. Other airlines with major operations in the New York are don’t appear to be canceling as many flights. Continental has called off 45 of 1,286 flights, and Delta has iced just 36 of 1,701 flights. Stay tuned for updates.
