Wolff:
Tourism Needs Stronger Lobby
"We must redouble our promotion of strong security that
also benefits the vast majority of travelers who pose no threat,"
Bruce Wolff, the national chairman for the Travel Industry Association
of America said in a speech yesterday. He doesn't know if Congress will
grant the industry the $100 million for international marketing that it
is requesting, but promises to build "an unprecedented united
front in Washington." The travel industry is no stranger to lobbying
Congress but only the airlines are acknowledged masters of pulling the
congressional purse-strings.

Can the U.S. Tourism industry really attract more visitors
while at the same time treating international guests as if they're criminals?
Maybe the government will view the $100 million TIA is requesting as a
way of soothing its guilty conscience.

Cars Keep Tabs on Drivers
Car rental companies have come to rely on an emerging technology called
telematics - which combines satellite-based Global Positioning System
tracking, wireless communications and vehicle monitoring systems - to
keep tabs on their vehicles. About a quarter of the rental cars in
the United States are equipped with tracking technology, analysts
estimate. The industry views telematics as a way to enforce its contracts,
but some customers regard it, at best, as a means to make more money and,
at worst, as an invasion of privacy. New

And finally ... the buzz on the boards is that international visitors
are so fed up with new screening efforts at the airport that there's an
effort underway to boycott U.S. tourism. If it picks up steam, we probably
