Wolff: Tourism Needs Stronger Lobby
"We must redouble our promotion of strong security that also benefits the vast majority of travelers who pose no threat," Bruce Wolff, the national chairman for the Travel Industry Association of America said in a speech yesterday. He doesn't know if Congress will grant the industry the $100 million for international marketing that it is requesting, but promises to build "an unprecedented united front in Washington." The travel industry is no stranger to lobbying Congress but only the airlines are acknowledged masters of pulling the congressional purse-strings. Posted 11:20 a.m.

Rental Cars Keep Tabs on Drivers
Car rental companies have come to rely on an emerging technology called telematics - which combines satellite-based Global Positioning System tracking, wireless communications and vehicle monitoring systems - to keep tabs on their vehicles. About a quarter of the rental cars in the United States are equipped with tracking technology, analysts estimate. The industry views telematics as a way to enforce its contracts, but some customers regard it, at best, as a means to make more money and, at worst, as an invasion of privacy. • And finally ... the buzz on the boards is that international visitors are so fed up with new screening efforts at the airport that there's an effort underway to boycott U.S. tourism. If it picks up steam, we probably deserve it. Posted 11: 20 a.m. | Send us your comments.
