The First 40 Weeks

Mommy singing for the USNA BandAugust 2001 - I was conceived in Annapolis, Md. Mommy worked at the United States Naval Academy as a vocalist. There's a picture of her on her last concert. And Daddy was a travel writer who stayed at home with two cats. Their names were Max and Moritz. In August, I was so small that my parents didn't even know I existed. Only the cats knew, but they didn't tell anyone.

Key LargoSeptember 2001 - Mommy and Daddy moved from Annapolis to Key Largo, Fla. They liked the islands because it was always warm and they could go Scuba diving (They both teach diving). Moritz decided she didn't like the tropics, so she ran away. But soon Mommy and Daddy discovered the cats' secret - they discovered that Ortho-Tricycline isn't completely effective! Ooops.

Mommy standing in front of Hemmingway's houseOctober 2001 - The whole world was a little wacky. Stock market crashes. Terrorist attacks. Cold weather. My parents were happy to be far away from that. They took me all the way down to Key West for a visit. Not that I could enjoy very much of it, but it sure looked like fun from the pictures.

Daddy sitting on a flats fishing boatNovember 2001 - Most normal fathers paint the bedroom in preparation for a new baby. My father went fishing. To be honest, I can't think of anything better to do myself. Except, maybe, go diving. Anyway, he had a terrific time out on the saltwater flats, catching bonefish and snook. I'm sure some day he'll teach me.

Pretty parrotDecember 2001 - There's no better place to spend the holidays than in the islands. Of course I couldn't see any of this yet, but all this talk of a white Christmas sounds charming, but cold. Here's my friend the bird displaying his colors for the occasion. Who needs a Christmas tree when you've got one of those?

My editors: Charlie, Hilary and SusanJanuary 2002 - Daddy flew off to Canada for a week and found me my first gig. I'm going to be the childcare expert for a ski guide book. Here are my editors: Hilary, Charlie and Susan. I hope I can meet all of my deadlines. I'll only be a few months old on my first assignment - someone's going to have to help with the typing at least.

Mommy reeling in a fishFebruary 2002 - Not to be outdone by my old man, Mommy went out fishing on the flats in Sanibel and really reeled 'em in. Hey, I guess now they can both teach me how to fish. When I'm ready to hold a rod. Daddy even wrote a story about how well she did.

Mommy with Elrod HendricksMarch 2002 - Mommy made sure that I wasn't bored, with my limited mobility and all. She and Daddy took me to a spring training game in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for the Baltimore Orioles. I even got to meet one of their most famous players, Elrod Hendricks. I can't wait to experience spring training next year, when I can actually see the game.

Mommy skiing a black diamond slope in New MexicoApril 2002 - Yes, it's true. Only a few weeks before I was due, Mommy went skiing in Santa Fe, N.M. And she didn't let anyone tell her which slopes she could - and couldn't - take. Here, for example, she's about to hurtle down a black-diamond run called "Muerte." I can't believe I actually made it to the delivery room in one piece. But you know, at least I got to visit New Mexico.

Mommy in labor at Baptist Hospital, MiamiMay 2002 - OK, the fun's over. It's time for me to bust out of this joint and experience the world for myself! But not before making Mommy go through 15 hours of labor (ouch!) and almost forcing her to have a C-section. In this picture, she's just arrived in the hospital.
